Curriculum Overview

The school currently operates a 50 period two week timetable (one hour each period) and in the first three years all students follow a common curriculum providing a foundation of general education in preparation for the courses offered in the Upper School. All students also participate in a one hour session of Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship.

Key Stage 3

In Year Seven students are taught in their mixed ability tutor groups for all subjects except mathematics and physical education (where they are in sets). The subjects are as follows:-

  • Maths
  • Science
  • Geography
  • History
  • Technology
  • Art
  • Music
  • French
  • Drama
  • Religious Education
  • Spanish
  • PSHCE
  • PE

In Years 8 and 9 students continue to be taught in tutor groups for a number of their subjects.  However on the basis of ability, setting occurs in Science along with Mathematics from Year 8. Students are further set in English, French and Spanish in Year 9. 

Selected students will follow a Communication Skills course in Year 9 and not a Modern Language.

In practical subjects namely Art, Technology, Science and Physical Education students are taught in smaller groups.

Key Stage 4

In their first three years at Caterham High School students have studied a wide range of subjects. In Years 10 and 11 students need to specialise in some areas in order to be able to study some subjects in the greater depth needed for success in public examinations.

 • In Years 10 and 11 every student will follow examination courses in English Language and Literature, Mathematics and Science

• Students will make additional choices selecting from the areas of Modern Languages, Humanities, Design Technology, Creative and Performing Arts, Business and Information Technology and Sport. A full list of subjects can be found in the Beyond 14 Making Choices booklet

• All students will follow non-examination courses in Physical Education

• All students will follow a course in Religious Education
