Physical Education is a fundamental part of any child’s development and we are dedicated to ensuring that pupils at Caterham are given the very best opportunities. The department creates a positive and enjoyable environment, where students feel safe and learning is the main priority. Pupils take part in a wide range of sports and activities during their PE lessons, Enrichment sessions, and Extra Curricular clubs, all led by a highly qualified, motivated and keen team of PE specialists. We approach each learning opportunity in an innovative and creative way to ensure that every pupil is able to make progress and have fun.

Our curriculum is specifically designed so that pupils are able to achieve high quality and worthwhile qualifications in line with their ability. We are very aware that pupils have different needs and so offer GCSE PE, GCSE Dance and BTECs at different levels, Sports Leaders Courses, AS and A2 level courses as well as sports specific qualifications where possible.

Our vision is to ‘teach students to enjoy physical activity and to enable them to strive to achieve their potential in sport’. We value every child and encourage participation in every activity regardless of ability. By offering a huge range of activities we hope we will capture student interest in our subject. Extracurricular activities are a vital part of a pupil’s life at Caterham and the opportunities are wide and varied.   .
Caterham High School was awarded sports college status in 2003.  Since the award, the school has built up a sports partnership of 40 primary schools and eight secondary schools, improving the quality of physical education provision and increasing the opportunities to take part in sporting activities across Redbridge.   As well as improving the standards of our primary students through specialist staff we also enable our students to gain invaluable leadership skills through coaching these students. As the Specialist Sports College in the borough we are in a unique position to use sport to motivate learning not only within our own curriculum area but across the whole school learning environment. See our link

Our Expectations

We expect every child to come prepared for their lesson with a full PE kit.
We expect all pupils to behave in a sensible and safe manner especially when using PE equipment.
We expect all pupils to show respect to others and treat them in the same way as they would expect to be treated themselves. This includes teachers, fellow pupils, technical and support staff.
We expect all students to complete class work to the best of their ability, taking care with presentation and the quality of work produced.
We have high expectations of our students and aim to motivate them to achieve the highest grades possible.
We expect pupils to regularly complete the homework that is set; all homework tasks can be seen on the school website via homework online. These frequently have additional support documents attached to help pupils in the completion of their work. 
We expect pupils to arrive to theory class prepared. This means bringing the correct equipment or resources for that lesson i.e. exercise/text book and pens.
