Children’s mental health is hugely important and very much in the news at the moment. If you have a concern about your own child, or another child’s, mental health, there are number of things that you can do:

  • You can contact your GP and ask for their advice and guidance

  • You can contact the school and talk to a member of the Safeguarding Team

  • You can visit the websites outlined below for further information and advice

Useful links

There are a range of external organisations that help support the safeguarding and mental health of young people. 

You may want to visit the NHS website's page on stress, anxiety and depression in young people.

The charity Young Minds has further advice and guidance on young people's mental health.

The Mental Health Foundation offer a series of publications on how to look after your mental health that are available to download for free. These include 'How to overcome fear and anxiety', 'How to sleep better' and 'How to manage and reduce stress'.

If you don’t know who to turn to or want to speak to someone initially that doesn’t know you, the following organisations are here to help:

  • Redbridge Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Service (EWMHS) – Tel:  0300 555 1182 or 0300 300 1624.  In an emergency outside of office hours, call Mental Health Direct – 24 hour crisis line – on 0300 555 1000.  You can find more information on the website.

  • Check out this Mental Health Useful Contacts Booklet developed by EWMHS.

  • Samaritans – 24 hour helpline for anyone who is distressed or experiencing emotional problems – call 08457 909090 or e-mail

  • Childline – a free, private and confidential service – call on 0800 1111.  Also available is a 1-2-1 counsellor chat.

  • Rethink Mental Illness Advice Line – call 0300 5000 927 (Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 14:00)

  • Saneline – call 0300 304 7000 (18:00 to 23:00)

  • Mind Infoline – call 0300 123 3393 (Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 18:00)
