Supporting Every Child to Thrive

 

At Caterham High School, we are committed to providing an inclusive education where every young person feels valued, supported and able to achieve their potential. Our Local Offer outlines the support available for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), additional learning needs, social and emotional needs, medical needs and barriers to learning. It explains what families can expect from our Access and Inclusion provision and how we work together to ensure all pupils can access learning, participate in school life and prepare successfully for adulthood.

 

We recognise that every child is different. As a result, the support we provide is tailored to individual strengths, needs and aspirations. Most pupils' needs are met through excellent classroom teaching, while others benefit from additional intervention, specialist support or one of our dedicated pathways.

 

What is Available at Caterham High School?

 

Quality First Teaching

All pupils benefit from high-quality teaching within the classroom. Teachers use adaptive teaching strategies, scaffolding, modelling, explicit instruction, visual supports and reasonable adjustments to ensure that learning is accessible and ambitious for all learners.

 

SEND Support

Where pupils require additional support, interventions are planned through the approach of:

Specialist Pathways

Team Transition

A specialist Year 7 pathway supporting pupils with significant SEND, complex needs, anxiety or EHCPs through smaller teaching groups, specialist staff and carefully planned transition support.

 

Transition Pathway (Years 8 and 9)

Additional support for pupils moving towards greater independence and increased access to mainstream learning, whilst continuing to receive targeted intervention and specialist teaching.

 

The Arch - Autism Resource Provision

A specialist autism provision supporting pupils from Years 7 to 13 through personalised programmes, social communication support, life skills development and specialist teaching.

 

Deaf Provision

A long-established specialist provision providing support from Teachers of the Deaf, specialist equipment, communication support and classroom technology including Redcat systems

 

EAL Academy

A specialist pathway for pupils who are new to English, combining intensive language acquisition with academic and pastoral support to aid successful integration into school life.

 

The Maple

Opening in September 2026, The Maple is a specialist provision for pupils with complex SEND transitioning from specialist settings and enhanced provisions.

 

The Base

Our internal alternative provision supporting pupils who require additional help with engagement, behaviour, attendance or reintegration into mainstream education.

 

The Zen Den

Our Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub providing counselling, mentoring, ELSA support, emotional wellbeing interventions, support for anxiety and EBSA, and a supervised lunchtime provision.

 

Supported Studies

At Key Stage 4, some pupils may access Supported Studies as part of their curriculum. This programme provides additional support in English, Mathematics and Science, helping pupils maximise their achievement across the wider GCSE curriculum. ]

 

Mental Health and Wellbeing

We recognise that emotional wellbeing is fundamental to successful learning. The school's Mental Health and Wellbeing Team works closely with pupils, families and external agencies to provide support through:

  • Counselling
  • Mentoring
  • ELSA interventions
  • Anxiety support
  • Reintegration support
  • Attendance support
  • Emotional regulation programmes

These services operate through the Zen Den and wider pastoral structures.

 

SEND Judo School

The Caterham High School SEND Judo School is a unique and highly successful part of our Local Offer.

The programme supports pupils with SEND and other additional needs to:

  • Develop confidence and resilience
  • Improve social interaction and communication skills
  • Strengthen wellbeing and emotional regulation
  • Build teamwork and leadership skills
  • Participate in local and national competitions
  • Access opportunities through British Judo's Adaptive Judo programme

The SEND Judo School demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that inclusion extends beyond the classroom and that all young people have opportunities to experience success, belonging and achievement.

 

Preparation for Adulthood

Across all pathways and provisions, we prepare pupils for their next stage of education, employment, training and adult life.

  • Independent living skills
  • Social communication development
  • Employability skills
  • Post-16 planning
  • Sixth Form pathways
  • Life skills programmes

Preparation for adulthood is embedded within our curriculum and specialist provision.

We believe parents and carers are essential partners in supporting children and young people with SEND.

We work collaboratively with families through:

  • Transition meetings
  • Parent consultations
  • Multi-agency meetings
  • Regular communication with school staff
